History and format of the tournament

In Russia, this sport appeared in 1865, when the first public skating rink was opened in the northern capital, where figure skaters trained and later the first Russian tournament was organized. In Soviet times, tournaments were also held annually.

Up to 90 people can take part in the championship. Including up to 18 athletes in single disciplines, up to 12 pairs and up to 15 dance duets. Participants are selected based on the results of the Russian Cup stages, which are held in autumn and winter. Skaters who take places from 1 to 8 in the first and second stages of the Cup can participate in 3-5 stages. Athletes who find themselves in 1-3 places in 3-5 stages go to the Russian Championship. Some skaters get the opportunity to perform at the main tournament of the country by decision of the Federation, without participating in the Cup.
